When: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 7:00 PM Location: Village Books Description: Join mother and daughter, Silvana and Sondra Clark, for the first evening of VB's Children's Book Week events. Sondra Clark wrote her first book when she was eight-years-old with her mother, Silvana Clark's encouragement. Her latest book, 77 Creative Ways Kids Can Serve, is great for kids who want to get involved in the community and parents who want to encourage them. Aimed toward 8-13-year-olds, the book includes step-by-step directions on ways kids can serve, such as: collecting old tennis balls to entertain dogs in animal shelters and putting together "Giggle Kits" to cheer up children in hospitals. A junior in high school, Sondra has traveled the world, written eight books, and was the youngest Olympic torch bearer out of 11,000 runners. Silvana Clark has written 11 books, including 12 Going on 29: Surviving Your Daughter's Tween Years with Sondra. A motivational speaker and television personaltiy, she has appeared on the FOX reality show, Trading Spouses. The Clarks live in Bellingham.

A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World
by
Horwitz, Tony
Tony Horwitz fills in the blank (and decidedly bloody) century of American history between the voyage of Columbus in 1492 and the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620, breathing life back into forgotten Spanish conquistadors, Elizabethan colonists, and massacred Indians, dispelling historical myths and giving an additional nod to the Vikings, who settled briefly in Newfoundland around 1000 AD.--Arlene Cook, Watermark Book Co.
